Methadone Therapy: Drug use and harm reduction in Afghanistan

93% of the world’s opium is produced in Afghanistan. In 2009, there were 1500000 drug users in the country. 50% of the country’s heroin users live in its capital, Kabul. Doctors of the World (Médecins du Monde) has been active in Afghanistan for the past 24 years in implementing different health programmes. Since 2006, we have been focusing on prevention, care and treatment for (injecting) drug users who are known as the highest risk group for HIV/AIDS in the country. Together with the Afghan Ministry of Public Health, we started a pilot programme for opioid substitution therapy. The first 10 persons received methadone in February 2010. This audio slideshow shows patients on methadone therapy. Photos by: Sandra Calligaro
