Question by C.C.: Continuation of heroin overdoses after a near fatal OD?
I have been a heroin addict for about 10 years. I was clean for 6 months before a bad relapse where I overdosed and ended up in the hospital. It was almost fatal, I was not breathing when the paramedics arrived. I unfortunately have continued heroin use through this week but am finding that no matter the amount, I blackout, or in other words, have less serious OD’s. I come to within a short amount of time, but it is very unusual for me. Did I do some sort of serious damage to my brain or body from the near fatal overdose? Is my liver maybe damaged or is my body somehow responding differently to the shots of heroin? I am obviously going to get clean again because it is clear that my next injection of heroin could quite easily kill me, but I’m worried about irreversible damage. I was getting addiction treatments last winter for an oxy habit, unfortunately the rehab, therapy, and all the psych visits for my suboxone treatment used up all of my available visits for “mental health or substance abuse” per year. I have been having alot of symptoms of depression lately..”crying spells, intense need to be held,severe fatigue, horrid sleep patterns, etc..” and don’t have any more visits available. I don’t have a job as i just graduated last year and am too weak to work more than an hour or so per day anyway. I have caresource which i think is medicaid based. Is there anyway i can get them to allow me to see a psychiatrist or are there any other ways to get help with this kinda thing?    Read more...

Question by Our Family Online: Is there a way to get REM Sleep with Severe Sleep Apnea & Narcolepsy/Cataplexy?
My husband has SEVERE Sleep Apnea and Narcolepsy. In his sleep studies, he wasn’t having any REM sleep at all until his third sleep machine – the VPAP. Now, he gets about 20 minutes of REM in a 5 1/2 hour night sleep and no REM during his naps. He sleeps 5 1/2 hours at night like clockwork, wakes up, takes his 3 Provigil, eats toast and 1/2 hour later can’t stay awake for anything. He’s out cold for 3 hours (with no REM). His daytime sleep test for Narcolepsy show that he falls asleep within the first 2 minutes of a “nap” and cannot stay awake in-between “naps”. It is dangerous. He has fallen asleep in the kitchen standing up and fallen completely over before – hitting his head on the granite counter and hitting the floor.    Read more...

I guess I should give a back story first..
I was on pain meds (roboxin, darvocet then vicodin) on and off for about 10 years (im 23) for an injury I got from some bullies in 7th grade.. My mother passed away in 2007 and my psychical pain was increased by emotional pain and suddenly I was taking up to 16 vicodin a day. To be honest I wasn’t taking it for the feeling. The pain was so intense that I kept taking more and more.. I come from a family of addicts so as soon as I started to feel it was a problem, I sought help. Last year (10/17/08) I started on Suboxone, had a bad reaction then a month later got on Subutex, 8mg a day. Its a year later and im still on this medication but down to 4mg a day.    Read more...
