Abusing Methadone: Fighting Withdrawal: Methadone Abuse & Addiction & Testing

Methadone is a prescription medication that is used to treat severe pain. It also helps those addicted to heroin to cease their use of the drug without experiencing horrendous withdrawal symptoms. Since heroin causes an excess of dopamine to be released into the brain, addicts feel a constant need for the drug to maintain this high. Methadone satisfies this need for an opiate without the euphoria associated with heroin. While users of methadone are ultimately transferring their dependence from one drug to another, they become more stable and no longer experience urgent impulses to take heroin. Once the desire to take heroin is completely diminished, patients are then weaned off of the methadone, although this process can sometimes take several years to complete.

Usage in Addiction Clinics

Addiction treatment requires a careful and systematic approach for it to yield positive results. Treatment at the addiction clinics are considered as the best form for patients who have been under the influence of any addictive substance. A person addicted to heroin, for instance, requires a carefully planned treatment methodology to help them recover efficiently along with a continued abstinence to the drug. One of the preferred treatments at the heroin addiction clinics is that of the methadone treatment.

Methadone, a drug itself, is used for treating narcotic addicts. The drug is known to relieve the addicts of the drug dependency as well as the withdrawal symptoms. It is profoundly used against heroin addiction along with a few other opiates. Countering the withdrawal symptoms experienced by recovering patients is a daunting task, and requires a hands-on technique for the patient to cope with the recovery process.
