Treatment for Methadone Addiction: Suboxone: Traditional Recovery’s Downfall?
Part one: A new treatment hits the scene.
By now almost every opiate addict has heard of suboxone, the amazing medication for opiate dependence that has taken the using world by storm. Despite an almost unanimous positive response among more then 100 suboxone-treated patients,I do have some mixed feelings about suboxone treatment. I also acknowledge that my opinions are likely influenced by my own experiences as an addict in traditional recovery. While suboxone has opened a new frontier of treatment for opiate addiction, it also threatens to split the recovering and treatment communities along opposing battle lines. This result would be a tremendous loss– a loss of the chance to ease the suffering of many actively using opiate addicts.
Is Methadone Treatment Obsolete?
For opiate addicts, such as those addicted to heroin, opium or synthetic opiates such as hydrocodone, methadone has allowed them to cease use of the addictive substance without painful withdrawal symptoms while they are in rehab. Once a person in rehab has been on methadone for awhile, treatment protocols vary. Some rehabs taper a person off methadone and some will keep a person on maintenance treatment, meaning that the person may be on methadone for the rest of their lives.
In recent years, some opiate addiction rehabs are campaigning for a change in methadone treatment guidelines, stating that this indefinite maintenance with methadone is the best idea. One study from 2000 found that 80% of those who quit methadone treatment relapse within three years. Some practitioners may consider this a reason to keep opiate addicts on methadone indefinitely but some see a different logic.
A Look Into Detox Symptoms
Medical technology has provided specific drugs that can help with detoxification symptoms. I know it sounds odd. Take a drug to get off a drug. But because some of the symptoms are so severe, having these drugs available can be very important. Plus, they are not addictive, and when you are under the care of a doctor, they will monitor your usage very carefully until you won’t have to take those drugs anymore.
One very effective treatment of opiate withdrawal symptoms is methadone maintenance therapy. It is safe when administered under the care of a doctor. Taken orally once a day, methadone suppresses narcotic withdrawal for between 24 and 36 hours. Because methadone is effective in eliminating withdrawal symptoms, it is used in detoxifying opiate addicts. It is, however, only effective in cases of addiction to heroin, morphine, and other opioid drugs, and it is not an effective treatment for other drugs of abuse.
