Methadone Treatment Uk: Methadone Treatment Can Be Difficult to Shake

Methadone Treatment is one of the few treatments heroin or opiate addicts can seek if they want to detox. While it has its good points, Methadone Treatment can be difficult shake and does have some pitfalls. Many patients because of the difficulties stay on what is called a Methadone Maintenance Treatment Plan (MMT). Although this is not the only reason Methadone patients stay on the maintenance program, after doing some research, it seems that fear of the difficulties and the actual difficulties involved in getting off of Methadone keep patients from trying or they fail to make it all the way off.

There are an estimated 1 million heroin addicts in the USA with a growing trend of younger middle to upper class kids getting hooked on heroin. One of the options in seeking treatment is Methadone, which is another type opiate similar to that of heroin but dispensed at federally regulated clinics called Methadone Clinics. These clinics are scattered about United States Cities, but can be difficult to get to for rural patients. Some patients need to travel many miles to get to the clinic daily for their methadone dose.

Methadone serves a purpose to the patient by enabling them to continue their lives without having to keep up with the mundane life of trying to get heroin all the time to maintain their dope habit, which needs to be fulfilled about every 4 hours to avoid withdrawals or being “dope sick”. Many addicts need to commit criminal offenses to maintain their heroin habits which can lead them into County Jails and State Prisons. A heroin addicts’ life is no picnic and they must continue that way of life to avoid being “dope sick”. This can get very tiring causing the addict to seek treatments like methadone.

Because Methadone is just another type of opiate the patient has essentially just switched drugs. If that patient should want to become free of all opiate addiction they must get off of the Methadone by weaning their doses down. After doing some research on the many opiate forums it is clear that the patient will suffer withdrawals when lowering their doses for an extended period of time.

One patients’ words:

“IMHO it’s good to get off all chemicals but it’s hard to quit the done. I tired at 60 mg and thought I was going to die. First four days nothing but a little anxiety, then pow, vomiting, stomach pain. It took three weeks to get my body back to normal after I tried to quit. I hate that I failed but I had to work.”

As we can see here the patient could not make it and ended up staying on the Methadone. There are many folks who do make it, but there is always a price to pay in withdrawals. There have been advances in newer medications such as Suboxone Treatment, which data has shown to work very well in getting the patient completely free from heroin. It seams that methadone can be difficult to shake if you really take a look around.
