Opiate/Heroin Addicts Only: Has Methadone Worked for You?

Question by AngE: Opiate/Heroin Addicts Only: Has methadone worked for you?
Don’t want other’s crappy opinions about methadone. I’ve heard it all. I want to hear from addicts who have tried MMT and hear about their results.
Clarification: Even if you had a bad result in MMT, would like to hear this. I don’t want info from non-addicts who have never taken it.

It does the trick, though at a cost. I’ve had both methadone and suboxone, and suboxone worked better for me. A lot of that had to do with I’d rather go to a doctor once a month than a clinic 5 days a week. But some people don’t like sub because it’s only a partial agonist, and they don’t feel like it “holds” them as well as methadone does.

But there is a reason they call methadone “liquid handcuffs.” It’s a BITCH to get off of, I mean really seriously, it was the hardest kick of my life, even worse than morphine/heroin, oxycontin, or hydromorphone.

If you’re up against a wall, and your only options are MMT or cold turkey, then go with methadone. It works, it will keep you well. It made me very lazy though, with a massive sweet tooth. Before I knew it, I had packed on 50 pounds in my first 9 months on methadone. Suboxone wasn’t quite as bad, but that stuff made me incredibly anti-social, I couldn’t stand being around other people while I was on it. But everyone reacts differently.
