What Alternatives Are There for Methadone Withdrawal and How Long Do the Last?

Question by Nait: What alternatives are there for methadone withdrawal and how long do the last?
I have been on about 30MG of methadone (prescribed) for close to 6 years now. I broke my back while in the military and in an effort to avoid surgery I see a pain management doctor. I have compressed nerves and a good amount of nerve pain associated with the condition (spondylolithesis grade 3) and the methadone has been a life saver because I can live a close to normal life and still be semi physically active. Without any pain meds I would have to resort to a major spine fusion that would begin the start of many times over being cut on. I just recently lost almost a whole bottle of methadone while out of town at a hotel and have not been able to recover it. My doctor’s office, although they do believe me because I have been as responsible as I can be while on this stuff), they told me that they cannot replace or offer an alternative for lost or stolen meds under any circumstances. So, I am left with the prospect of withdrawing from methadone “cold turkey” and I am absolutely feeling like my world is ending. I am on day 3.5 of going without and it only keeps getting worse. I just about cussed out my doctor and accused him of being irresponsible knowing that I would be stopping cold turkey after being on this stuff for 6 years, not too mention the fact that the pain meds keep me being able to function normally and stay on my feet for long periods of time. I understand policies but I have been a responsible patient with a track record of using any extras prior to filling new scripts! I cannot sleep even a little and have not slept longer than 20 minutes in the past 3.5 days and I cannot function normally at all. My only current options are to deal and have my prescription filled at the normal interval in 24 days.

What options do I have? Can I go to a methadone clinic and explain this to them or explain my dependence and get these withdrawls to go away and to resume normal physical activity?
